Learn the basics of classic improvisation through team games and exercises. Techniques based on various improv classes taught worldwide. Bring lots of energy!

Todd Johnson, an actor and producer living in the Los Angeles area, has over 25 years of acting experience on the stage and screen with numerous credits to his name. His FREE program is very popular citywide.


The Art of Graffiti w/ Artist/Filmmaker Bob Bryan. Thurs, May 27 at 4 PM.

In a fun, interactive workshop, Bob Bryan breaks down the differences between the worlds of tagging and graffiti as an art form. Come prepared to create your own art and also see clips from Bob’s award-winning documentary series Graffiti Verite.

Both authors will read from their works and answer your questions about writing, screenwriting, etc. Come to the program & get a chance to win a brand new Guitar Hero game (To be eligible to win, you must be in 6-12 grade and have a current library card in your name).

Ed Decter authored the Chloe Gamble series and VIP Lounge and was screenwriter for Santa Clause 2 & There’s Something About Mary. Lin Oliver authored the Who Shrunk Daniel Funk series.

An introduction to the ancient art of Chinese brush painting—specifically painting animals. Materials will be included and are non-toxic and water-soluble.

NOTE: This is a program intended solely for Young Adults (Grades 5-12). However, because this is a special event, parents or guardians accompanying their Young Adults are also welcome to attend.

Chef TroyEl presents an educational and multicultural cooking seminar at the Palisades Branch Library. Come see him prepare different food dishes from countries in South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe—and even some good old North American dishes!

Chef TroyEl is a graduate of the California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena, CA. He has worked in restaurants, owned his own catering company (Love’s Taste), and helped start the world’s only 100% Organic fresh baby food company (Homemadebaby).

Wed. July 23, 2008. 4 pm. The Art of Papermaking w/ Peggy Hasegawa. Peggy's popular workshop takes participants back 2000 years to China. Come form beautiful sheets of paper from common materials such as plants, cotton fiber, or recycled pulp. Materials provided. Teens (entering Grade 6-12) Only.

Sat. July 12, 2008. 1:00-2:30 pm. Design Your Travel Poster Contest Workshop. This summer, in conjunction w/ Passport to Reading, the library sponsors a citywide travel poster design contest w/ cash prizes. Two posters from the Palisades Branch will be nominated to compete in the final round. Come to this workshop & work on your poster! Materials will be provided, but be creative and bring ideas and materials of your own, as well. Teens (entering Grade 6-12) Only.

Wed. June 25, 2008. 4 pm. Invention Workshop w/ Susan Casey. Are you a budding teen inventor? In a fun, interactive session, learn how teen inventions have been patented, trademarked & sold in stores. Brainstorm w/ other audience members and find out about national teen inventor's contests. Teens(entering Grade 6-12) Only.







Kick Off to Teen Summer Reading Program: Featuring 2 events in 1 day!

Sat. June 14, 2008. 1-2 pm. Mehndi (Henna) Body Tattoos w/ Russell Chan. One of the most popular teen programs in the city! Russell Chan presents an historical overview of henna tattoos & applies the henna paste designs to members of the audience. (Note: the paste is applied harmlessly to skin and lasts from a week to a month). Teens (entering Grade 6-12) Only.

Sat. June 14, 2008. 2:15 pm Special Screening of an Adventure Classic. Directly following the Henna Tattoo workshop. Come enjoy one of the best adventure classics that takes you to mysterious, far away places. Free candy and drinks will be provided. All are Welcome.

Young Adult Beaded Jewelry Workshop w/ Danli “Imani” Bayne. Wed, Nov. 28, 2007. 4 PM

Create your own necklaces and bracelets using colorful beads, wires, strings, clasps etc. in one of the city’s most popular craft programs.

Danli “Imani” Bayne is an experienced craft person and artisan, specializing in metalsmithing and handcrafted jewelry. She has been a workshop artist in numerous festivals and programs, including KTLA’s Kids Day LA Festival, Manhattan Beach Arts Festival, and the LA Cultural Affairs Department-sponsored program Sunday Open Sunday. NOTE: Young Adults (Grades 6-12) Only. Because materials are included, this workshop can accommodate only 25 people, so the first 25 to arrive get to stay.

I Just Saw a UFO…or Did I? The Secrets of Critical Thinking w/ James Underdown.

How do we know something is true or not? Is eyewitness testimony reliable? Join James Underdown, Executive Director of the Center for Inquiry-West, in an interactive program filled w/ optical illusions & unexpected surprises that display the many ways we can be fooled.

James Underdown has appeared on Oprah, Hannity and Colmes, the Sci-Fi Channel’s Proof Positive, & the History Channel’s History’s Mysteries. He has also written for the Skeptical Inquirer and Free Inquiry & is group leader of the Independent Investigations Group, which investigates allegations of paranormal ability and supernatural claims.

Former Palisadian Beckie Weinheimer discusses the writing/publishing process in an interactive one-hour program. Weinheimer’s well-reviewed Young Adult novel, Converting Kate, features 16 yr. old Kate’s struggle with a religion that influences everything in her life from her homeschooling to her unfashionable handmade clothes.

Learn classic step-by-step approaches to creating fully developed cartoon characters, such as Fred Flintstone, Tweety Bird, the Tasmanian Devil, and Max and Ruben’s own superhero Ally. The session also includes flip-book design.

Max Espinoza and Ruben Gerard are co-creators and publishers of ALLY and LAVA comic books. They conduct comic & animation workshops throughout LA.

ASTRONOMER SPACE E. TRACY’S SOLAR SYSTEM UPDATE

Can humans live on Mars? Is Pluto still considered a Planet? How many planets, besides Saturn, have rings? The peerless Space E. Tracy will answer these questions in a fun-filled indoor astronomy program with demonstrations, guided activities and lots of comedy! Tracy is NASA-award-winning lecturer-historian-archivist and a faithful telescope operator at Mt. Wilson Observatory. An Asteroid was recently named after her by the International Astronomical Union for her work in astronomy education!
