12/8/2008: New DVDs have arrived, including Gossip Girl (Complete First Season) and the infamous Teeth. Come look for them--and remember that they'll always feature the yellow YA sticker.









11/3/2008: Batman and Son by Grant Morrison is a graphic novel that presents the Dark Knight with an interesting conflict: the beautiful Talia (daugher of an archvillain) shows up and announces that Batman has a son: the mysterious "Damian." The news does not sit well with Robin! Writer Grant Morrison is one of the most legendary, not to mention infamous, comic writers of all time. (Available in the Young Adult Graphic Novel shelf).






10/21/2008: Cat Eyed Boy vol. 1 is a collection of classic horror manga (circa 1967) by the well-renowned Kazuo Umezu, who remains a pioneer of the horror manga genre. Available in the YA Manga area.









10/10/2008: A free upcoming program at the Palisades Branch Library:

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Peace Corps, But Were Afraid to Ask.

Tori Wilson, a regional representative for the Peace Corps, presents an interesting and informative multi-visual introduction to Peace Corps service. Tori was stationed in Jamaica from 1998-2001.

2/17/2008: Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (Director's Cut) is a fun-filled satire about a little mass murderer named Johnny--but then most of you already know that. Anyway, this graphic novel, blood-splattered as it is, is now available in the teen area where all the other graphic novels are located.

12/19/2007: Scott Westerfeld's thrilling 4th book in the Uglies series is now available, but you will need to put your name on the Holds list, for everyone in the city wants to read this one.

Summary: It's a few years after rebel Tally Youngblood took down the uglies/pretties/specials regime. Without those strict roles and rules, the world is in a complete cultural renaissance. "Tech-heads" flaunt their latest gadgets, "kickers" spread gossip and trends, and "surge monkeys" are hooked on extreme plastic surgery. And it's all monitored on a bazillion different cameras.

Danli “Imani” Bayne is an experienced craft person and artisan, specializing in metalsmithing and handcrafted jewelry. She has been a workshop artist in numerous festivals and programs, including KTLA’s Kids Day LA Festival, Manhattan Beach Arts Festival, and the LA Cultural Affairs Department-sponsored program Sunday Open Sunday. NOTE: Young Adults (Grades 6-12) Only. Because materials are included, this workshop can accommodate only 25 people, so the first 25 to arrive get to stay.

James Underdown has appeared on Oprah, Hannity and Colmes, the Sci-Fi Channel’s Proof Positive, & the History Channel’s History’s Mysteries. He has also written for the Skeptical Inquirer and Free Inquiry & is group leader of the Independent Investigations Group, which investigates allegations of paranormal ability and supernatural claims.

8/18/2007: The manga trilogy Princess ai is Tokyopop's latest huge hit. Written by rocker Courtney Love, D.J. Milky and Misaho Kujiradou, the story centers on a young goth girl in Tokyo who suffers from amnesia with only a heart-shaped box giving clues on who she really is. Look for this series on the manga shelves in the YA area.






8/11/2007: Cirque Du Freak creator Darren Shan has another horror series called The Demonata, and the latest installment "BEC" is now on the shelves. If you can't wait for your reserve copy to come in, check out the "Hot of the Press" shelves where "BEC" will be available every 7 days.

8/3/2007: Check out Gus Van Sant's Elephant, an intense film of a violent day in an "ordinary" high school. Controversial, edgy and thought-provoking. Read more.

5/22/2007: Ok here's the deal: Many of you are fans of the Young James Bond series penned by Charles ("Charlie") Higson. Currently, only two titles are available in the United States: Silverfin (Book 1) and the recent Blood Fever (Book 2). The latest installment, Double or Die, just came out in paperback in Great Britain, so it's reasonable to assume that it will quickly make its way to the U.S., right? Wrong. For some inexplicable reason, Double or Die, is not scheduled to be published in the U.S. until 2008.

I find this completely unacceptable. So I've specially-ordered two paperback copies from Amazon U.K. due to arrive in 2 weeks. If you wish for me to reserve you a copy once they arrive and are processed, email me at hgambill@lapl.org. (#37244174980871 and #37244174980889)


5/21/2007: Victoria Ashton's third book in the Confessions of a Teen Nanny Series is now available in YA Fiction. Book #3 is called "Juicy Secrets."

5/16/2007: Many great new YA fiction titles have hit the shelves, including Jodi Lynn Anderson's sequel to Peaches, which is entitled The Secrets of Peaches.

5/15/2007: Fans of Laura Anne Gilman's Grail Quest series will be pleased to know that The Shadow Companion, the final installment of the trilogy, is now on the Young Adult fiction shelves.



5/10/2007: Those of you who have enjoyed Clamp's manga work (e.g. Chobits) might appreciate Clamp's Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle series. Volumes 1-11 are currently available on the Manga shelves.

Also, the 1996 Anime classic "Ghost in the Shell" has been added to the popular DVD shelves.




5/7/2007: Now That's What I Call Music #22 (a.k.a. Now 22) has been on the Popular CD shelves for a little while, but I forgot to list it here on Paliteens. Now #24 will be coming soon, too.
